Chris's Gold Day Picks
Race 1: 12:15 MICHEL NAIRAC APPRECIATION STAKES (Listed) 1600m
A competitive looking opener over the mile. I Salute You, Winter Games and Narina Trogon are fairly closely matched on their Durban July day run over C&D and many others have claims. That includes Diani who is better off with a number of these on some of the more recent collateral form line. Drawing the widest gate is a concern but I wouldn't be surprised to see him running on to the finish and could be the value in the race.
Selection: Diani win at around 16/1 and top 4 finish at around 23/10
Race 2: 12:55 WORLD POOL WITH RACE COAST DEBUTANTE (Grade 2) 1200m
Some very smart 2yo fillies line up over the 6 furlongs, Dean Kannemeyer is double handed including the short price favourite Princess of Gaul, a wide margin winner of her only start to date who benefits from being drawn 1, should be hard to beat. Gauteng raider Mystical Miss is another debut winner to take note of whilst Elegantrix and Keukenhof (stablemate of the favourite) are closely matched on form (Scottsville 31st May) and have more runs under their belts.
Selection: Win Princess of Gaul at around 33/20
Race 3: 13:45 FOLLOW @WORLDPOOL on X STAKES (Grade 2) 1200m
A couple of fillies take on the boys in another juvenile feature, again over 1200m. The favourite Aristocratic wasn't far off when running fourth in a Grade 2 contest over 1400m on July day, that looks about the strongest form on offer and can land a quick double for the Kannemeyer / Zackey combination.
Selection: Win Aristocratic at around 18/10
Race 4: 14:35 DOUGLAS WHYTE STAKES (Grade 1) 1600m
All of these 2yo fillies are trying the mile trip for the first time. That extra ground could unlock improvement but the red hot odds on favourite, PE raider Golden Palm has already picked up a feature when visiting Gauteng this season and Richard Fourie's mount looks very hard to oppose at cramped odds. I will sit this one out.
Race 5: 15:15 WORLD POOL MOMENT OF THE DAY CHAMPION STAKES (Grade 1) 1600m
A full field of colts and geldings for the last of the juvenile races. Half of the field met on July Day over 1400m when Chronicle King was a surprise 33/1 winner ahead of Malmesbury Missile, Tin Pan Alley, Soldier Boy and 3 others. There were excuses for some horses that day and that presents something of a conundrum for Sunday. I'll switch to Tote betting, which can be placed through Hollywoodbets and look for the first three home to come from any combination of 1 Soldier Boy, 4 Chronicle King, 7 Tin Pan Alley and 10 Malmesbury Missile.
Selection: Tote Boxed Trifecta 1,4,7,10 (R24 for a full perm x whatever total stake suits your pocket)
Race 6: 15:55 MERCURY SPRINT (Grade 1) 1200m
Over to the speedsters for this Grade 1 and Tenango is your clear favourite having won 5 of the last 7 starts but could be worth taking on from gate 13. Beyond the favourite it looks wide opening but I'll take my chances with Questioning who probably needed his last run which wasn't a bad effort from a wide gate. Drawn much better in gate 6 this time and likely to strip fitter he looks worthy of each way support.
Selection: Questioning to win at around 8/1, top 3 finish at around 33/20
Race 7: 16:35 WORLD POOL GOLD CUP (Grade 3) 3200m
Time for the Gold Cup over the marathon trip and King Pelles is a worthy favourite, all be it at odds which to me appear to be on the short side. I would imagine Gavin Lerena has had the choice of which of the two Frank Robinson runners to ride so his engagement on Madison Valley, which he rode to a gallant fifth in the July, is a pointer. As long as the selection is over the July Day exertions he should be involved in the finish.
Selection: Madison Valley, small win at around 5/1 and then top 3 finish at around even money
Race 8: 17:15 THE HKJC CHAMPIONS CUP (Grade 1) 1800m
Top quality in this field with the Durban July winner The Real Prince taking on Dave The King who won this race last year and has been aimed at defending the crown. Gladatorian and Royal Victory where behind the Real Prince in the July (for which See It Again was an unfortunate scratching) but weight for age conditions this time around bring them closer together. Then you have the 3yo Fire Attack who raids from Gauteng and Montein and Son of Raj who are more than useful and it's a cracking contest in store.
I could be way wide of the mark here but I see it as an open contest and I'm going with See It Again and a sentimental choice of Royal Victory to run in the first 3 and hopefully claim a decent dividend.
Selection: Tote Swinger 5 and 7 (both need to run anywhere in the first 3 places)
Race 9: 17:55 BET WITH THE WORLD GOLD BRACELET (Grade 2) 2000m
A competitive line up of fillies for the Bracelet and whilst there are many with chances preference is for Lock and Key. On ratings this lightly raced 3yo has something to find but I've been of the opinion she is crying out for this distance and is worth an each way nibble at the price.
Selection: Lock and Key to win at 12.5/1 and to run in the top 3 places at around 26/10
Race 10: 18:35 HKIR IN DECEMBER UMNGENI HANDICAP (Listed) 1000m
A competitive listed handicap to end with and a real head-wrecker in my book and I'm looking for a
runner with a half decent draw, from a top yard and with a top jockey to hopefully end on a high. There is more than one that fits the criteria but my chip comes down on the side of Rodeo Drive (gate 6, Sean Tarry and de Melo).
Selection: Rodeo Drive to win at around 5/1
