RACE 1
IGUGULETHU is having his first run in the Eastern Cape for trainer Gavin Smith. He was in need of his last run over 1200m at Hollywoodbets Kenilworth. The son of Erupt drops to 1000m and the blinkers should sharpen him up. If settled into his new surroundings, he may find himself in the winner’s enclosure.
AND ACTION ran a fair race in his local debut over 1100m on the Polytrack. He would have come on from the run and should enjoy racing on the turf track. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
PONTE VECCHIO ran a good race when third over 1100m on this course last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. She is in a good space and should give the males a run for their money.
RACE 2
QUEEN OF JAZZ has been costly to follow in her last three starts. She was a tad disappointing in her last start over this distance on the Polytrack. She has finished second twice from three starts over this C&D. If everything goes according to plan, she should be the one to beat.
FIRST WISH’S last start must be ignored as the jockey became unbalanced at the start. She finished 4.5 lengths behind the top choice on debut. She has plenty of scope and is one of the leading contenders.
GLOBAL SCENE ran a fair race over 1400m last time. She finished 6.85 lengths behind the top selection in her penultimate run. Chase Maujean retains the ride and she is capable of finishing in the money.
RACE 3
WALT WHITMAN ran on when second over 1400m on this course last time. The son of Canford Cliffs will love the rise to 1600m. He meets the right field and if getting away to a clean start, he should be the one to beat.
KING’S SAILOR finished 3 lengths behind the top selection last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and he may have to settle for the same result. The son of Gold Standard may be the one to fill the exacta spot.
DONNY’S BOY was in need of his debut effort over 1400m on this course. The son of Global View would have gained from the experience and should love the rise to the mile. With the natural improvement that is expected, he should finish in the placings.
RACE 4
ELLORIX should have finished closer over this distance on the polytrack last time as she was awkwardly placed at the 200m mark. The daughter of Vercingetorix should enjoy racing on the turf track. Richard Fourie is booked to ride and he may be able to coax that little bit extra out of her where it matters most.
RAIN BIRD ran a good race when second over 1300m on the Polytrack last time. The drop to 1200m should not pose an issue and she can earn another cheque for her patrons.
GREEN FAME is having her first run for the Kelly Mitchley stable. The daughter of Gimmethegreenlight is lightly raced and has scope. There should be improvement to come from her.
Race 5
GRAZINGINTHEGRASS fought hard in his last start but found one too good in the form of CHERRY ANO. He has won twice, finished second once and third once from seven starts over this distance. He is drawn wide in barrier 10, but Richard Fourie knows him well and he should give him all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
CHERRY ANO is better than his last start in the Non-Black Type Fairview 1400. He is a much better horse on this surface having won six times from ten starts. He should throw out a big challenge to the top choice.
RUNAWAY SONG finished 0.1 lengths behind the top choice last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and there should not be much separating them at the finish.
Race 6
BATTLEGROUND hails from the visiting Lucky Houdalakis stable. He stayed on when third over 1800m on the Vaal Classic course last time. He finished third in the Listed TAB Gold Bowl in his penultimate start, over this distance. The booking of S’manga Khumalo is a big plus and if all went well with his travels, he should find himself in the winner’s enclosure.
BOURNEMOUTH is better than his last start. He returns from a 14-week break which would have done him the world of good. On his best form shown, he should go close to winning.
ZATARA MAGIC was in need of his comeback run over 1400m. He won a good race in the Non-Black Type Glenlair Trophy in his penultimate start. He will strip a much fitter horse and can return to best form.
RACE 7
GIMME’S LASSIE finished 1.55 lengths behind PASSCHENDAELE last time. She is 7kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. She gets the services of 4kgs claiming apprentice Nirvan Nastili which will assist her cause. She is the best-weighted runner in this contest and should return to winning ways.
PASSCHENDAELE ran a good race when third in the Listed East Cape Breeders Stakes last time. She is ideally better suited to shorter but is in a good space and should pose a threat.
PINNACLE finished 0.25 lengths behind ROSE OF BAYEUX last time. She is 4.5kgs better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned. She may be hard to peg back in the run down to the line.
RACE 8
GIMME’S LADDIE was slow into stride over 1200m last time, but stayed on to finish fourth. It must be noted that Jewel Cat has come out and won again since. The manner in which he finishes off his races suggests that he will love the rise to 1400m. He should enjoy the longer run-in on the turf and can notch up his third-career victory.
MASKED VIGILANTE was unlucky not to have won his last start over 1200m on the Polytrack. His last victory came over this distance and he should pose a massive threat.
EL REY VIENE is having his first run for the Gavin Smith stable. It must be noted that Strathclyde has come out and won again since. He does have the speed to overcome his wide draw, but Luyolo Mxothwa is likely to use his early gate speed to get across without using up too much energy
