After late heartbreak in losing the Nedbank Cup Final to Kaizer Chiefs last weekend Pirates return to league action in second spot but needing a miracle to stay in the title race with the gap to Sundowns now 15 points. The Bucs still have 5 league matches to play but their goal difference is also vastly inferior to that of the league leaders so even a 100% record from here onwards would be highly unlikely to be enough.
Pirates have won 4 of their last 5 league outings and the most recent of those came away to Tuesday's opponents Golden Arrows a week ago when they came away with a 2-1 victory. Maswanganyi gave Pirates a 51st lead in that game before Mathanti equalized and Mabasa's 72nd minute goal gave Pirates the points.
Arrows have played 24 matches and taking Royal AM out of the equation only Cape Town City are below them on the log, 3 points in arrears. Arrows are without a win in their last 5, 2 draws followed by 3 straight defeats and they have work to do to avoid the possibility of relegation.
The Verdict:
If the Bucs were to win here Sundowns could still wrap up the title on Wednesday when they visit Chippa. A combination of disappointment from the Nedbank Final and mission impossible in terms of staying in the title race could have swayed me towards Arrows avoiding defeat but there is another factor to consider.
This is coach José Riveiro's final game in charge of the Bucs and he will want to bow out on a high. I think his players would share that sentiment and given Arrows need a positive result too, I'm looking for both teams to find the net
