Saturday is Soweto derby day for Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates in the Betway Premiership at Soccer City and vital league points are at stake.

 

 

 

Kaizer Chiefs

 

Chiefs have played 25 matches and are ninth in the standings with 30 log points. They are without a win in their last 6 league outings, a run of 3 draws and 3 defeats and overall their Betway Premiership record comprises of 8 wins, 6 draws and 11 defeats.

 

The silver lining could yet be provided by the Nedbank Cup. A 2-1 win over Sundowns on 13^th April set up a showdown with Pirates in Durban on the 10^th May and an opportunity to end a trophy drought.

 

 

Orlando Pirates

 

Pirates come into the game in second spot and all of 12 points behind Sundowns but they have played just 21 matches, 2 fewer than Downs so the title race is not over yet. Recent league games have been pretty sparse due to commitments in CAF and domestic cup competitions but a 1-0 home defeat to Sekhukhune on 30^th April did nothing for their pursuit of the league leaders. Pirates have won 15 of their 21 matches, drawing just 1 and losing 5.

 

Recent Head to Head

 

A last gasp penalty gave Pirates a 1-0 win in the first league meeting this season in early January. Pirates also won both of last season's league games by a single goal margin.

 

 

The Betting:

 

In the match result betting Chiefs are 23/10 to win the game with the draw at 2/1 and Pirates can be backed at around 13/10

 

A game of 3 goals is more in total is trading at around 1.33/1 and it's even money for both teams to score.

The Verdict:

 

Pirates are tasked with bouncing back from disappointment in the CAF Champions League and a surprise home defeat last time out. Chiefs proved they can rise to the occasion with the cup win over Sundowns but there is little cause for optimism in terms of recent league form.

 

With the Nedbank final looming in just a week's time that might be more of a distraction for Chiefs than Pirates who have no margin for error in the title race and I'm with the Bucs to continue the recent trend of edging the derby by the minimum margin.
