BettingDiaryArgentina will be looking to follow up on their historic win over New Zealand last week when they take on Australia at the McDonald Jones Stadium in Newcastle on Saturday. We take a look at the game from a betting angle.

Argentina’s win over the All Blacks has thrown the betting for this Championship wide open with Australia currently 12/10, Argentina 17/10 and New Zealand 28/10 underdogs.

Argentina started a massive 25 point underdogs against New Zealand in Sydney last week and even at half-time when leading 16-3 you could still get (+5.5) Argentina on the handicap. They put in a proper 80 minute shift and beat the All Blacks 25-15 and the pre-match talk of them being rusty and not match fit proved to be well off the mark. The question, of course is can they lift themselves to the same extent against Australia this week.

The Wallabies have been something of a mixed bag in recent weeks, but they are also on a high having beaten the All Blacks 24-22 in Brisbane two weeks back. Prior to that they were given a 43-5 beating by the All Blacks in Sydney and the week off may count in their favour.

Australia have dominated Argentina over the years winning 8 of the last 10 matches between the sides. They met in 2019 in Brisbane with the home team edging it 16-10, but Argentina did win at the Gold Coast in 2018, 23-19.

Argentina 17/10

Draw 25/1

Australia 11/20

Handicap: Argentina (+4.5) at 9/10, Australia (-4.5) at 9/10

Suggested Bet: Winning Margin, Argentina under 12.5 points at 23/10

While both of these sides have beaten New Zealand in recent weeks they did it in different ways and I was particularly impressed with the physical bullying that Argentina dished out last week. That match may well have taken something out of them, but if they can approach this game with anything like the same intensity they must have a good chance of victory. Either way I see this being a close encounter and I am going to go with Argentina to edge it by 12 points or less.
