The PGA Tour remains in Texas this week for the Valero Texas Open as the players prepare for the first major of the year, the US Masters which tees off next week. We look at this week’s golf from a betting angle and pick 4 players to take on the bookmakers.
The Course
The Oaks Course at TPC San Antonio is located 22km north of downtown San Antonio. It features water hazards on only two of its 18 holes and the fairways are for the most part fairly narrow and lined by trees on both sides, while the greens are large and undulating.
The course is also dotted with deep bunkers, poised to capture any wayward shots and the wind often blows and is generally the determining factor as to how tough the course plays.
This par 72 course plays 7,438 yards.

Corey Conners at 17.00
There must be something about the Texas Open that suits Corey Conners, with two wins, a top 15 and a top 25 all in the last five years. Conners is also coming off the back of some hot form on the PGA Tour with two top 10 and a third-place finish in his last three starts. It seems that all the momentum is in his favour this week and he will be looking to win the tournament for a third time.
Suggested bet: Each way at 17.00.
Akshay Bhatia at 26.00
Bhatia will be heading to the Texas Open looking to defend his title after putting up a strong fight at the Players Championship two weeks ago where he finished 3rd. Bhatia has had three top 10 finishes in his last four starts on tour and has all the momentum he needs to defend his title.
Suggested bet: Each way at 26.00.
Alejandro Tosti at 176.00
An outside shout but a shot never the less, Tosti played some brilliant golf last week as he finished 5th at the Houston Open. He also managed to finish 10th at the Mexico Championship only a few weeks ago. He missed the cut on debut last year but given last weeks top 5 came off the back of 3 consecutive missed cuts that may not mean much.
Suggested bet: Each way at 176.00 and a larger play on a Top 10 finish at 13.00.
Ben Martin at 201.00
Martin is another player who really enjoys the course with top 10’s in the last 2 years. His current form is poor with 3 consecutive missed cuts but he has always been streaky and may just come to hand at a familiar track with good memories.
Suggested bet: Each way at 201.00 and a larger play on a Top 20 finish at 6.50.
