Race 1
HELSINKI was given too much to do from the widest draw over 1400m last time and he stayed on to finish fourth. He gets the services of 4kgs claiming apprentice Trent Mayhew and from his mid-field draw, he may be the one to side with.
IRISH LUCK may not have seen out the mile last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished third that day has come out and won since. His best career effort came over this distance and if finding the form of that race, he should pose a threat.
GRIFFIN PARK is having his first run for the MJ Odendaal stable. He is lightly raced with scope. If suited to the polytrack, he should improve.
Race 2
BLUE HORIZON showed good improvement in her last start over 1600m on this course. She raced from a handy position and stayed on to finish second. The blinkers seem to have done the trick and she can go one better.
OFF LIMITS finished 1.8 lengths behind the top choice last time. The pair meet on the same weight terms and she may have to settle for the same result. She is carded to race on 21 January 2024 and her progress in that race will need to be monitored.
JOAN THE WAD stayed on when fourth in her last start over 1600m on this course. She will love the rise to 1900m and cannot be ignored.
Race 3
CATCH THE TUNE had to overcome an awkward draw over 2000m on the turf last time and ran on from last to finish fourth. He has a decent record on this course. The 5yo gelding is having his peak run today and if not too far out of his ground turning for home, he can return to winning ways.
FROPOLITAN won a good race in his last start over 1900m on this course. He gets the services of 2.5kgs claiming apprentice Kobeli Lihaba and if fit, he may be hard to peg back.
FINE ADMIRAL finished 0.3 lengths behind BANZAI PIPELINE last time. He is 1kg better off at the weights today and that should be enough for the tables to be turned.
Race 4
RODRIGUEZ stayed on when fourth over this C&D last time. It must be noted that the horse that finished second that day has come out and won since. He meets a similar line-up this afternoon and can return to winning ways.
JOSEPHINE’S PRIDE was his own worst enemy over 2000m last time as he over raced in the early stages, but he stayed on to finish fourth. He finished 0.1 lengths behind the top choice in his penultimate run. The pair meet on the same weight terms today and there should not be much separating them at the wire.
KHANYISA INDLELA has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. He gets the services of 4kgs claiming apprentice Trent Mayhew which will assist his cause. If switching off early, he should run a big race.
Race 5
MR PIGALLE was in need of his comeback run over 1400m on this course last time. He has won once, finished second twice and third once from five starts over this C&D. He will strip much fitter and can improve to win.
SUNDANCE KID has not finished too far off the winner in recent outings. He should have no issues with the step up to the mile and should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
WINTER WAVES ran on powerfully to win his last start over 1400m on this course. He received a five-pound penalty for that victory. The 6yo gelding is in a good space and can place.
Race 6
BOWIE has good recent form lines to his credit. It must be noted that William Robertson has come out and won again since. He takes a slight drop-in class and he can return to winning ways.
WILLIAM RUFUS won a good race in his last start over 1200m on this course. He takes on stronger, but is in a good space and he can follow up with another victory.
WYLIE RILEY has good recent form lines to his name. He has won twice, finished second once and third twice from eight starts over this distance. He is likely to race on the speed and is a solid back up for the Gareth van Zyl stable.
Race 7
PRINCESS ARLOWE was an easy winner of her last start over 1600m on this course. She set the pace that day and found more where it matters most. The daughter of Vercingetorix would have come on from the run and should have more to come.
ZINIKELE is better than her last start over 1600m on the turf. She has won twice and finished second twice from five starts over this C&D. On best form shown and with luck in running, she should pose a threat.
SLEEK AS SILK ran on well when fourth over 1600m on the turf last time. She has won once, finished second twice and third once from nine starts over this distance. With luck in running, she should have a say in the outcome of this contest.
Race 8
PHAKA IMALI raced from a handy position over 1200m on the turf last time and stayed on to finish fourth. He has won twice, finished second twice and third once from ten starts over this C&D. He does have a wide draw to overcome, but Sean Veale should give him all the necessary assistance from the saddle.
PURPLE POWAHOUSE has fair recent form lines to his name. Three of his four career victories have come over this C&D. Should the top choice fluff his lines, he may be the one to pick up the pieces.
