TURFFONTEIN RACE 8, 16:00
BETWAY SUMMER CUP, 2000M R6,000,000, GRADE 1
1. See It Again 33/10
Draw (6) Weight 60kg Merit Rating 131 Trainer Michael Roberts Jockey Piere Strydom
Comment: This years favourite gets his first look at Turffontein. The KZN raider has been gelded and kept in training with races like this in mind his running style suggests he will appreciate the long home straight. Has to enter calculations from a handy draw.
2. Main Defender 12/1
Draw (3) Weight 59kg Merit Rating 130 Trainer Tony Peter Jockey Aldo Domeyer
Comment: A huge talent who ran a cracker under a welter burden last time out but untried over this distance. Could well be a factor if he stays the trip.
3.Winchester Mansion Scratched
Draw (13) Weight 129kg Merit Rating 59 Trainer Brett Crawford Jockey Marco V'Rensburg
Comment: Scracthed
4. Royal Victory 11/2
Draw (15) Weight 57kg Merit Rating 125 Trainer Nathan Kotzen Jockey Gavin Lerena
Comment: The defending champion also from KZN. Has 3kg more weight then last year but still looks on a good mark. Wide draw a concern but ticks all the other boxes. Big player.
5. Purple Pitcher 11/1
Draw (8) Weight 55.5kg Merit Rating 123 Trainer Robyn Klaasen Jockey Kabelo Matsunyane
Comment: Didn't really catch the eye in two prep runs but likely to be fully wound up for this and he could be good value at the price
6. Barbaresco 14/1
Draw (12) Weight 55kg Merit Rating 122 Trainer J A Janse van Vuuren Jockey Raymond Danielson
Comment: Arrives in good form after two decent runs and very capable of holding his own in top company.
7. Puerto Manzano 50/1
Draw (14) Weight 54.5kg Merit Rating 120 Trainer J A Janse van Vuuren Jockey Athandiwe Mgudlwa
Comment: The winner of this race in 2022 but whilst you wouldn't want to write him off completely, at 7 years old his best racing days may well be behind him.
8. Pure Predator 33/1
Draw (16) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 119 Trainer Fanie Bronkhorst Jockey Chase Maujean
Comment: Excuses in most recent prep run for this course and distance winner but the draw could have been a hot lot kinder.
9. Frances Ethel 9/1
Draw (7) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 118 Trainer Brett Crawford Jockey Oisin Murphy
Comment: This filly gets the services of a top overseas jockey. Has won over track and trip, drawn well and will be of interest to many.
10. Future Pearl 30/1
Draw (4) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 119 Trainer Sean Tarry Jockey Richard Fourie
Comment: Has the services of the current champion jockey and hails from a top yard although best form is over longer trips than this.
11. Zeus 60/1
Draw (20) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 117 Trainer Fabian Habib Jockey Rachel Venniker
Comment: Ran fourth in this race last year and the jockey booking really takes the eye. Watch out for any market moves but has to contend with gate 20
12. Beating Wings 30/1
Draw (5) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 116 Trainer Stuart Pettigrew Jockey Diego De Gouveia
Comment: Encouraging prep runs over distances short of his best. Well drawn and could go well at a nice price
13. Silver Sanctuary 10/1
Draw (9) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 116 Trainer Mike de Kock Jockey JP v'd Merwe
Comment: This filly is from another top yard, likely to be fully primed for a big run and given the trainers record in these races you might want to keep this one safe.
14. Hotarubi 40/1
Draw (18) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 115 Trainer Sean Tarry Jockey Craig Zackey
Comment: No luck with the draw but a couple of shrewdies have labelled this as one of the better long shots.
15. Litigation 75/1
Draw (1) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 114 Trainer Sean Tarry Jockey Dennis Schwarz
Comment: Finished down the field last year from a wide gate, drawn in poll position this time around but would be a surprise winner based on weights and form.
16. Atticus Finch 20/1
Draw (2) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 112 Trainer Alec Laird Jockey Calvin Habib
Comment: Ninth in this last year and on ratings has something to find but has drawn well and the prep runs were encouraging.
17. Rule By Force 25/1
Draw (10) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 112 Trainer Joe Soma Jockey Tristan Godden
Comment: Very lightly raced for a 5 year old but recent improvement after gelding got him into the race.
18. Cape Eagle 80/1
Draw (17) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 110 Trainer Andre Nel Jockey Serino Moodley
Comment: Consistent 7 year old, visiting Turffontein for the first time, will give his all but will probably need to run a worldy to win it.
19. Madison Valley 50/1
Draw (19) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 110 Trainer Frank Robinson Jockey Sean Veale
Comment: Another KZN visitor, stays well and probably still improving but has something to find on weights and ratings.
20. My Soul Mate 75/1
Draw (11) Weight 54kg Merit Rating 108 Trainer Candice Dawson Jockey Philasande Mxoli
Comment: Very useful form last season but we haven't seen that sort of level in two recent prep runs.
The Verdict:
A super competitive race and preference is for Royal Victory to defend his title. Although drawn wide his record over track and trip warrants huge respect and if horse and rider secure a good position from the break he can pick up his rivals in the home straight.
Purple Pitcher is taken to run into the top 4.
Bets: Win, Royal Victory at 7/1
Place (Top 4), Purple Pitcher at 24/10
