Wednesday's Euro 2024 action comes from Groups A and B, Croatia take on Albania first up and then we have Germany v Hungary and Scotland v Switzerland.

Croatia lost their opening game against Spain 3-0. All the goals came in the first half, Croatia also missed a couple of golden chances before the break but the game was gone by the time Bruno Petkovic missed a late penalty.

 

Albania were very much the underdogs for their opening match against defending champions Italy but they took the lead through Nedim Bajrami after just 23 seconds. That was as good as it got for Albania and Italy levelled things up on 11 minutes and took the lead with 16 minutes on the clock. There was no further scoring and Albania created little else in a 2-1 defeat.

 

The Verdict:

 

As mentioned Croatia were not without chances against Spain and they need to be more clinical here to get their campaign back on track. Albania still look a bit hard to judge to me but both sides are playing catch up and my gut feel is there is scope for 3 goals or more here.

Germany 1 / 4 Draw 52/10 Hungary 10/1

 

Germany flew out of the blocks against Scotland in the first match of the tournament on Friday night. Florian Wirtz and Jamal Musiala had the 2-0 up inside 20 minutes and Kai Havertz made it 3-0 from the penalty spot on half time with the Scots reduced to 10 men. Niclas Fullkrug made it 4-0 midway through the second period and at the death Scotland got a consolation through a Rudiger own goal before Emre Can made it 5-1 and that was how it finished.

 

Hungary went down 3-1 to Switzerland in their first action of the tournament. They were 2-0 down by half time but pulled a goal back through Barnabas Varga on 66 minutes and the Swiss made the game safe in injury time.

 

The Verdict:

 

Hungary had impressed in qualifying but less so in their opening match and they will do well to keep Germany at bay. They did draw 2-2 with Germany in Euro 2020 and that's the sort of spirit and performance they will need to show here.

Scotland 33/10 Draw 2.65/1 Switzerland 17/20

 

Ryan Porteous was the man to pick up a first half red card in the 5-1 defeat to Germany but they way the game was panning out it was hard to see any way back for Scotland.

 

Kwadwo Duah and Michel Aebischer put Switzerland in control against Hungary and after Hungary reduced the deficit Breel Embolo sealed victory in injury time.

 

The Verdict:

 

The Swiss can seal a last 16 spot with victory here and Scotland need something to keep their hopes alive and I make both teams to score? (yes) a good bet.
