The 2023 Wimbledon Championship gets going at the All England Club on Monday 3 July and we take a look at the women’s tournament and suggest a couple of bets.

Iga Swiatek at 95/40
The big question around Swiatek this week is whether she has recovered from the food poisoning that caused her to withdraw from the Bad Homburg Open ahead of her semi-final on Friday?
She had looked strong to that point dropping only 1 set on her way to the last 4 and she made short work of the 9th seed Blinkova in her semi-final.
Swiatek won the French open beating Muchova in 3 sets but her Wimbledon record is not great and she has yet to make the quarter-finals.
Elena Rybakina 15/4
Rybakina is the defending Wimbledon Champion having come from a set down in last years final to beat Ons Jabeur.
She was 2nd seed in the recent Grass Court Championships Berlin but found 1 too good losing to Vekic in the final 4-6 in the 3rd.
A concern for her backers is that she pulled out of the French Open with a virus and didn’t start what was to be her final tune up at Eastbourne for the same reason.
Aryna Sabalenka 9/2
Sabalenka looked good in the Grass Court Championships Berlin but would as top seed have been disappointed to lose to Kudermetova in the final losing 6-7 in the 2nd set.
She missed Wimbledon last year due purely to her nationality but she made the semi-finals in 2021 which is why bookies are showing her respect.

Petra Kvitova 11/1 – the 2014 champion
Coco Gauff 13/1 - beat Venus Williams in the opening round in 2019 but has not made it past the 4th round
Ons Jabeur 15/1 – 28 years old but quarter-finalist and runner up in the last 2 years
Donna Vekic 22/1 – won in Berlin but never been past the 4th round at Wimbledon
Madison Keys 30/1 – Quarter-finalist in 2015 and won Eastbourne on Saturday
VERDICT
This has a very different feel from the men’s tournament where we have a hot favourite in Djokovic. There are question marks around all of the ladies at the top of the betting boards and this could well be a tournament where we get an unseeded winner or at least a winner at 20/1 or bigger.
There are doubts over her health but she has been playing well enough and I rate her the best player on grass in the field and for that reason am backing Rybakina to defend her title.
My dark horse will be Keys who has shown strong form and I am going to back her to win her quarter against the likes of Sabalenka and Muchova.
