Tournament Preview
The opening WGC event on the calendar gets underway in the Mexican sunshine, with the world’s best all looking to get their hands on a sizeable chunk for the $10 million prize pot. The event which has been played all over the world historically, is now into its 21st year and is one of the most prestigious tournaments on the tour. Tiger Woods has notoriously been the man to beat at this event, with 7 previous wins to his name whilst Ernie Els, Phil Mickelson and defending champion Dustin Johnson are also multiple winners of the event. With attention starting to turn towards The Masters in less than two months, the whole field will be looking to find form in Mexico, and it promises to be a fascinating week of golf.
Betting Preview
Outright Winner
The field is littered with big names in Mexico and with prize money and ranking points to play for, there is plenty at stake this week:
Despite making all the running at the Genesis Invitational last time out, Rory McIlroy faded badly on the Sunday and he will be keen to close out an event here – he finished second last year too.
Three-time WGC Mexico/Cadillac Championship winner Dustin Johnson is the defending champion here and he could be a good bet to make it back to back wins on a course he clearly enjoys playing.
Spaniard Jon Rahm is operating at a career high of number 3 in the world rankings and with 7 consecutive top 20 finishes to his name, he looks to be in the form of his life.
Despite a relatively poor showing at the Genesis Invitational last time out, Justin Thomas is always in contention in the big events and he was runner-up at this event in 2018.
With 5 consecutive top 10 finishes and a tournament win at the Phoenix Open last time out, Webb Simpson is arguably the most in-form player on the tour and he’ll be one to watch this week in Mexico.
1st Round Leader
With plenty of money on the line here in Mexico, plenty of players will fancy their chances of getting off to fast start:
Hideki Matsuyama finished 5th at the Genesis Invitational last time out and he will be keen to kick on from that strong showing here and get off to a flying start.
With 4 top 10 finishes from his last 5 appearances, Tommy Fleetwood is in fine form and if he gets off to a fast start here, he could be a tough man to catch.
Home favourite Abraham Ancer has emerged as a real contender on the PGA Tour in recent times and whilst the field looks strong to compete with over 4 days, he could catch a flying start this week.
Top 10 Finish
With so many quality players assembled here in Mexico, getting into the winning enclosure could be tough but there are plenty of candidates to finish in the top 10 come Sunday:
Australian Adam Scott won this event in 2016 and following his superb win at the Genesis Invitational last time out, he will be full of confidence here in Mexico.
At the age of 41, Matt Kuchar is playing some of the most consistent golf of his career and following his second placed finish at the Genesis last time out, he should raring to go this week.
2014 winner Patrick Reed hasn’t been at his best so far this year, but he certainly has the ability to turn on the style and he should relish the conditions in Mexico this week.
